January is almost over and I’m sure by now millions have already committed the cardinal sin of breaking one if not all of their New Year’s resolutions. Although that may sound a bit harsh and presumptuous, I say so hoping that millions prove me wrong; that everyone loses the 50 pounds they want to lose, that those desiring to be the best version of themselves this year seize the opportunity to start anew, and that Sarah Palin stops embarrassing Christians everywhere. I’d rather make a Bush joke but with his absence from the White House and subsequent return to high school to finish up his GED, it’s pretty much slim pickings. Now that may read like a punchline but I assure you it’s not a joke. Don’t laugh.

And in my attempt to continue with my goal of 2 books per month, I’ve decided to commit the remaining week and a half to finishing Steinbeck’s Journal of a Novel. The way I look at it, completing one book is better than nothing. Last week I wasn’t able to blog because my entire church was fasting Internet and television, and in the spirit of sacrifice, I decided to focus my reading on devotional literature = The Bible. I think my break from reading has done me some good and I am again ready to read, read, READ!

I’ve already begun thinking about what books to tackle next month. I haven’t narrowed my search down yet, but already I feel led to draw from the growing stack on my nightstand. This past weekend my in-laws were in town, and as usual, my father-in-law found himself drawn to the small collection of books we keep on a bookcase in our office. Unbenounced to my wife and I, he’d started reading a short non-fiction book by Randall Kennedy and during a trip to Borders (heaven-on-earth) he commented on the growing number of books in our personal collection. Now this may seem a little dorky to some of you, but I blushed a bit at his statement. I honestly thought that was one of the best compliments anyone has ever paid me. One of my great aspirations in life is to have a large library in my home, one of those fancy ones with shelving built into the wall. That would be sweet! Maybe I should add a feature to my blog that would allow people to send me their unused/unwanted books to a P.O Box or something. That’s really not a bad idea at all.

In light of my statement on resolutions, how are you doing in your effort to start again in 2010? Post at will :-)
